Thinking about buying into the One Piece TCG? There’s one single number that you need to know about OP-01 Romance Dawn as an investment. At launch (December 2022) a sealed booster box from this set retailed at around $100 USD. Now jump to today (2026) that exact same sealed box currently sits between $2,700 and $4,344 USD, if you can’t tell that is a stupidly massive jump in price. It’s a return of 2,700-4,344% in only three and a half years, it makes S&P investing look like a joke.
We covered a lot of impressive appreciation stories here at The TCG Times. For example, Hidden Fates going from $50 to $548 USD, XY Evolutions from $35 to $2,503 USD, Gold Star Pokémon doing extraordinary things, lots of good news for investors that got in early. But the OP-01 is still an anomaly we haven’t seen before, over this very short timeframe a brand new TCG jumps beating every other TCGs resell value in percentage terms. So understanding why OP-01 has become a monster in the TCG space so quickly is key to understanding One Piece TCG investment as a whole.
Why OP-01 Is the Base Set of One Piece
Every great TCG has an unforgettable OG set, this set needs to be a wanted commodity to really create something of value in the TCG space. The thing is, the publisher will never know if it will be worth it until post-release. OP-01 currently sits at the apex of the TCG investment hierarchy, at release no one would have guessed this. It’s happened before, but with the same concept, no one knew how big these TCGs would get, for Pokémon it was Base Set, for Magic it was Alpha, and of course for Yu-Gi-Oh, it was the Legend of Blue-Eyes White Dragon.
Clearly, for One Piece, OP-01 Romance Dawn seems to be the “dawn” (bad joke, but we had to leave it in) of another groundbreaking TCG.
When Bandai launched OP-01 in December 2022, it seemed impossible that another TCG could break into the crowded market. Therefore, their print volumes reflected that, they were conservative and measured, and no one was anticipating the worldwide demand that was about to hit. Then Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece popped off, when you combine the anime fan base, TCG fanbase and the new live-action fan base, there aren’t enough cards to go around… Bandai’s initial print run was never made to accommodate the old and new audiences together. So when everyone eventually caught on that the product was scarce, OP-01 was already out of print and prices skyrocketed!
Early buyers that are still holding are absolutely cheering right now, because that initial underprint is permanent. And remember, every single time someone rips an OP-01 box, the sealed supply drops again, and again and the price goes up and up. This is nothing new, though, It is the exact same thing that drives the prices of Alpha Magic cards and Base Set Pokémon, it’s now just playing out on a shortened timeline because the game’s growth has been quick and dramatic.
The Investment Fundamentals: Why This Holds Up
The four pillars rule we coined its what we believe determines long-term card investment value, we detailed the full framework here, but why are we bringing it up… because OP-01 clears every single one of these pillars with ease.
Rarity: In the OP-01 case its genuine, and permanent. To keep it simple sealed product cannot be reprinted in its original form. And to make it even better Bandai’s Block X rule means OP-01 through OP-05 Manga Rares are exempt from competitive rotation. Therefore, the supply pool can only shrink.
Playability: OP-01 is obviously where the game started, it brought the core mechanics, iconic characters, and the foundations that every set that’s followed has built on. Think of it like Base Set Pokémon, everyone already knows these cards, everyone has played with them.
Nostalgia: Most of us know One Piece has been running as a manga since 1997 and has been one of the biggest anime since 1999. That is over 25 years of building one of the strongest fanbases in pop culture and that has created a deep connection with the characters before a single card was ever made. Lots of the buyers of OP-01 are investors trying to make a profit these are die-hard fans collecting. That nostalgia does not and clearly will not fade… it compounds.
Aesthetics: OP-01 introduced the Manga Rare treatment, an absolute genius move with banging artwork. It’s panel artwork directly from Eiichiro Oda’s original manga and is the highest rarity class in the One Piece specfifc TCG. The Gol D. Roger Gold Super Parallel at $4,982 USD shows us all exactly what the ceiling looks like when the right character gets the ideal treatment.

What to Actually Buy: Sealed vs Singles
A classic debate for any TCG, The sealed box is of course the one that gets the most attention. Why? Well, the money…. $2,700-4,344 USD per box, with sealed cases entering the $12,000+ USD, the “big leagues” and that’s roughly a 40% year-on-year growth. So if you have OP-01 sealed product, we know the hold case is compelling.
But what if you are considering buying in at the current sealed prices? The maths requires a much longer hold and a clear understanding of the potential risk. If you made the $3,000 USD+ sealed box purchase, you need to be holding for multiple years with conviction, this is definitely not a “hold for 6 months and flip it” situation. Anyone who entered the market at $100-500 USD have far less to lose then those entering today.
Now let’s look at the singles market. It offers far more accessible entry points. But within reason, you can’t just start buying singles and expect them to jump in price. You should be considering these types of cards, OP-01 Manga Rare singles, some Leader cards with competitive and collector demand, and the alternate art cards from this set. This group of cards is an easier way to buy into the OP-01 rather than the usually more expensive sealed box investment.
The Reprint Question
We know what you are thinking, we were thinking the same… can Bandai just reprint OP-01? Well, technically yes BUT hold your tears, early investors, here is why the risk is far lower than it sounds. Reprinting the first set of a game carries massive brand risk for Bandai; it would be a clear message to every collector and investor in the market that no set or sealed product would ever be safe from reprints, which would annihilate all the confidence in the entire TCG investment ecosystem around One Piece. The short-term revenue from a reprint would kill the longer-term revenue of a successful TCG. So chill out homie, Bandai has shown a clear understanding of this exact dynamic through the Block X rule. This is a decision they made specifically to protect early set value.
The TCG Times’ Verdict: The One Piece Investment You Cannot Ignore
OP-01 Romance Dawn is the most important investment asset in the One Piece TCG and currently the most compelling sealed product hold in the entire TCG market (right now). Look at what we went over, the “OG” set, the Block X protection, the Manga Rare ceiling shown by the Roger GSP, and the IP pop culture titan behind One Piece as a franchise. It is impossible to call this just “hype”, It is the same investment logic that made Base Set Pokémon the gold standard it is today. It is just playing out on a far quicker timeline, due to the game’s growth being even more explsive that nay of us ever expected.
If you are building a One Piece portfolio and OP-01 is not in it… you might be left behind in the future.
